December 21

Pinecrest

Elevations, slope angles and aspects:

7000-9000', slope angles approaching 35°, all aspects

Slopes skied:

Lookout peak northwest facing and Ellsworth gully south facing

Snow conditions:

South facing had limited to no snow prior to the recent storms.A bit bushy. Storm total was around 14-16" with the layer cake somewhat settled especially at upper elevations where early and mid storm wind help compact it. Storm snow was capped with about 6" of light density, making the skiing fluff over a sponge rubber base. Collapsing was frequent on the bushy south facing and still present on north facing. There was some wind drifting, mostly on east and northeast facing ridges.

Weather:

Overcast, low clouds with spits and sputters of snow. Winds were light and temperatures moderate.

Snow pit:

lookout snow pit

Evaluation:

Lacking the early season snow, faceting over old layering was limited to a few inches near the ground and the thin band from last week. Instability noted at that layer should settle fairly quickly, leaving a stable snow pack
